IELTS Model Answer Bar Chart October 2018

The bar graph depicts the proportion of men, women and children with daily consumption of five portions of fruits and vegetables in the United Kingdom from 2001 to 2008.

At first glance, it is clear that women mere most likely among the three groups to include fruits and vegetables in their daily diet, followed by men and children. Further, at any point of time, this habit was seen in less than a third of any of the groups. With regard to consumption of five portions of fruits and vegetables, there had been an increasing trend in the first six years only to reach a plateau later. This trend was seen in all the three groups of the populace.

From 2001 to 2006, the consumption of five portions of fruit and vegetables rose consistently. The percentage of women, who had this habit rose from around 22% in 2001 to well above 30% in 2006. Among men, there was an increase in the proportion from approximately 17% in 2001 to around 27% in 2006. Similarly, in 2001, only about 12% of children ate five portions of fruits and vegetables. This had increased to well over 20% by 2006.

Following 2006, the habit of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables remained stagnant. In fact, there was a decline among women to around 30% by 2008. Among men, the percentage of those with this habit fell marginally by close to 1%, while it increased among children by just about a percent. By the end of the survey in 2008, women were still most likely to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables, followed closely by men and children.

Some errors in my writing were

1. Factual- The rise among men and children was nor consistent. In fact, in the first 3 years, there was no rise at all.

2. My 2 body paras were based on 2001-2006 and 2006 onwards. It would have easier to make boys para 1 about women and para 2 a bit men and children.

3. Most have concluded that a summary is not necessary. Rather an overview is more important.

4. I am not sure about point 3 since some tutors think otherwise.
