IELTS Model Answer Bar Chart October 2018

The bar graph depicts the proportion of men, women and children with daily consumption of five portions of fruits and vegetables in the United Kingdom from 2001 to 2008.

At first glance, it is clear that women mere most likely among the three groups to include fruits and vegetables in their daily diet, followed by men and children. Further, at any point of time, this habit was seen in less than a third of any of the groups. With regard to consumption of five portions of fruits and vegetables, there had been an increasing trend in the first six years only to reach a plateau later. This trend was seen in all the three groups of the populace.

From 2001 to 2006, the consumption of five portions of fruit and vegetables rose consistently. The percentage of women, who had this habit rose from around 22% in 2001 to well above 30% in 2006. Among men, there was an increase in the proportion from approximately 17% in 2001 to around 27% in 2006. Similarly, in 2001, only about 12% of children ate five portions of fruits and vegetables. This had increased to well over 20% by 2006.

Following 2006, the habit of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables remained stagnant. In fact, there was a decline among women to around 30% by 2008. Among men, the percentage of those with this habit fell marginally by close to 1%, while it increased among children by just about a percent. By the end of the survey in 2008, women were still most likely to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables, followed closely by men and children.

Their model answer is given on their website.

Some errors in my writing were

1. Factual- The rise among men and children was nor consistent. In fact, in the first 3 years, there was no rise at all.

2. My 2 body paras were based on 2001-2006 and 2006 onwards. It would have easier to make boys para 1 about women and para 2 a bit men and children.

3. Most have concluded that a summary is not necessary. Rather an overview is more important.

4. I am not sure about point 3 since some tutors think otherwise.

Thanks for joining me!

So I scored a 6, when I got my writing evaluated for the first time and that too, the a day, no 2, before my actual exam. I took the the exam nonetheless. I got my scores yesterday: L 8.5, R 9, S 8, W 6.5. That 6.5’s gonna haunt me. Needed a 7. Hope to get there soon enough. So here I start. I thought I ll publish my works here. I ll not be putting topics for fear of copyright. I ll also be putting in tips and tricks, that I come across.

The one that got me a 6

The illustration depicts the management structure in a marketing organization. There are three levels of seniority in the organization, including the President, Vice President, executives and managers.

There are a total of eight employees in the company. The organization consists of advertising and sales teams. Both these teams report directly to the President, Mr Dobbs. He is assisted by the Vice President of marketing, Ms. Fields and two executives, Mr. Tremblay and Mr. Gartner. Ms. Fields has marketing duties and supervises Mr. Robbins, who is a summer intern. The sales team has three members and is led by Mr. Tremblay, the sales executive, who is assisted by two sales managers, Mr. Smith and Mr. Namath. The advertising executive, Mr. Gartner, has a team that includes the advertising manager, Ms. Clark. Both of them comprise the advertising unit.

To conclude, the company deals with marketing and has advertising and sales units and employs a total of eight people, who are divided into three levels on the basis of their seniority.

Task 2

For centuries, universities have been the cradles of higher education. In the present era, most universities offer various types of courses to students and a lot of these courses are not designed to churn out workers for the market. While professional courses have an obligation to prepare students for the jobs they are going to do, the same does not apply to a lot of other courses. I believe that universities should allow the exploration of knowledge and allow their wards to apply this knowledge in their field of work later.
Most universities have a wide variety of courses in diverse fields, ranging from arts to humanities, literature and sciences. While these fields do not overlap, and a student of arts need not study literature and vice versa, it is not wise to focus just on a particular job while designing courses. It is important for the university to expose him/her to all forms of a subject and then let them decide. It would be unfair to decide their passion beforehand and force them down a particular path just because they are likely to do that job in the future. However, there are a few exceptions to this
The human brain can only acquire so much knowledge. An arts student must not be exposed to a lot of science or he may get distracted and lose focus on his courses. Further professional courses should focus on the skills of the trade. A surgeon need not study literature. He may do it as a hobby on his own but the university need not promote this.
To conclude, universities have a duty to expose their students to a vast degree of knowledge, which need not be limited to the job that they are going to do. At the same time, they must not overload them with information and cause distractions.

Task 1

The line graph depicts the enquiries addressed to the Tourist Information Office in a metropolitan area in the fist half of 2011 along with the mode of enquiry. Tourists used telephone and letter/email to get their queries answered or did so in person. At first glance, it is clear that there was an increasing number of enquiries as the year progressed and this trend was most prominent among in person queries.

The total number of enquiries in June was all most double of that in January. Of the approximately 3900 enquiries in June, the maximum were in person. This was closely followed by telephonic requests and the least were by letter/email. This can be contrasted against the statistics of January, when in person enquiries were the least popular totalling around 450. The most common modality in January was the telephone at approximately 900 users, followed by letter/email at around 750, giving a total of close to 2100 queries in January. From January to June, not only did the interest of tourists rise, but also there was a definite contrast in the popularity of the mode of enquiries. The fall in the use of letter/email to 700 by March and 350 by May and June was in stark contrast to the use of in person enquiries, which had overtaken the former by March to reach a number of 800 and had become the most popular means by April with a total of 1250 queries. Telephonic queries did show a gradual rise too, but did not keep pace with in person enquiries.

To conclude June is the most popular month for tourists and most enquiries were made in person. The popularity of different modes of enquiries varied with the month of the year.

Task 2

The environment has been in the news recently due to numerous disturbing phenomenon such as global warming, which pose a significant danger to it. Since a healthy environment is essential for the survival of our species, it is prudent that we take steps to ensure the same. Whilst some argue that it is the duty of our governments and major corporations to take steps in this direction, I believe that an ordinary citizen can take important steps such as responsible use of plastic and fossil fuels, which will go a long way in ensuring a healthy environment.

The redundancy of plastic has been a major bane. Not only is it widely used, but also it is very difficult to dispose off. Most plastic waste is simply dumped into landfills or diverted into our oceans, where they are extremely harmful to the marine ecosystem. Recently, the government of India banned the use of plastic in numerous areas, but it is up to the individual to ensure that the ban in enforced. In my own locality, numerous shopkeepers continue to use them for fear of losing customers. Apart from avoiding plastics, we can help this noble cause by using fossil fuels responsibly.

In the modern world, fossil fuels provide energy for a wide range of activities such as driving, cooking, electricity and so on. Unfortunately fossil fuels are responsible for most of the greenhouse gases, that are released into our atmosphere. An individual can take simple steps such as walking or taking public transport whenever feasible instead of taking his car. Simple initiatives such as switching off a light bulb when not in use can go a long way. Similarly, use of modern electrical devices such as LED bulbs can reduce the consumption of energy by virtue of their efficiency. All these are steps, that an individual can take at their own level. For instance, the government of India has announced major subsidies on LED bulbs, solar water heaters and electric cars but it is up to the consumer to choose these products instead of traditional ones.

To summarise, authorities do have a role to play in protecting our environment but they are unlikely to succeed unless individuals cooperate. We, as common people, can make a huge difference by taking simple measures such as avoiding plastics and traditional fuels, thus playing our part in saving our environment and securing our future.
